Leica M2 -1962
"Puzzle" style
Once again, “why so much hate!!”
I won’t tell you why this poor M2 arrived in such a “messy” state, except that at first, it was only a problem with the curtains and mechanical blockage…
This M2 was dismantled 90% of the time, which is totally useless.
But the worst thing won’t be playing “mechanic” like during some childhoods, or imagining yourself on the assembly line of the Leitz factory, the worst thing is the state of the rangefinder!!!
That’s another matter…
Reassembly
Little by little, it is returning to normal operation.
After arming, the shutter, the curtains, rewinding, complete lubrication; the flash sync wiring was reinstalled, the anti-fogs changed, the slow speed mechanism cleaned, lubricated and reassembled.
The curtain tensions balanced and the speeds adjusted.
As always with old and mechanical shutters, choices must be made on the actual shutter speeds.
It is systematically irregular, but it remains within tolerance
The results were obtained with the little “Shutter Lover” by Sébastien Roy, which I appreciate for the possibility of recording the results on the screen.
This allows us to compare the differences obtained from the settings made on the camera as we go along.
On this device, the curtain translation times are a bit slower than the average I have observed on other M.
With the classic tension (+/- 12ms) the arming was too firm.
Maybe stiffer springs on this model???
After all that, it’s the rangefinder’s turn.
Cleaning, reassembly, adjustments. Everything needs to be reviewed, horizontal, infinity, minimum focus, frame revelry, etc…
(Poor Leica M, that one really suffered)
A bit of bodywork
This camera had received violent and deep shocks on each side…
(But how is this possible??).
So much so that the hood no longer fit normally…
It’s not easy to straighten rounded parts without having steel “forms”.
Luckily (or with the help of Ste Bidouille), I have a 50mm f/3.5 barrel that fits, the curvature of which corresponds exactly to that of the hood… A few blows with a fine hammer, and it’s already much improved.
Of course, it’s still marked, no miracle, but the hood now fits without difficulty.
